Mark the dates – 2020 Prygl Rowing Camps

Mark your calendars with the dates. Registration will open soon.

July Camp

July 4 to July 9th. Followed by the possibility to compete in the Czech Open Masters Regatta in Trebon on July 11 and 12.

The Czech Open Masters Regatta is one of the biggest (and strongest) international Masters regattas in Europe. In the 2019 edition, it had competitors from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Germany, The Netherlands and Slovenia. The regatta is rowed on a beautiful lake with a full Albano course. The town of Trebon is one of the most beautiful towns in Southern Bohemia.

August Camp

August 26 to August 31. Followed by the World Rowing Masters Regatta in Linz-Ottensheim, Austria.

We don’t need to introduce the biggest Masters rowing event in the world, the WRMR. In 2020, it will be held in Linz-Ottensheim, conveniently close to Brno. Come to Europe early, get used to the boat you will race in and prepare at our beautiful lake.

Both camps will feature the use of data and video to improve your technique, and at the end of the camp you will have learned new skills, know how to improve your technique and be able to monitor your technique progress using the latest rowing data technology. You will stay in one of the great wellness hotels around the Brno lake and you will enjoy great local food and drinks.

The June 2019 Rowing Camp

It was a great camp. Here is a summary of what we did.

Monday

After a quick meeting to go through the weather and some other camp related logistics on Sunday evening, Monday was the real start of the camp. Those who were renting boats did a thorough check of the equipment, including some last changes of shoes (of course we had some spare pairs). Those who brought their own boats used the time to get it ready to row.

Then it was time to try out the lake. Adam and Sander were taking the first videos, as well as giving some instructions about the traffic pattern.

It was already getting hot.

After the row, we enjoyed Romana’s coffee and cake (and a pot of tea), analyzed the videos and discussed the necessary rigging changes. This first day is really necessary to get everybody set up correctly. No time for rowing data yet.

After the coffee break, Adam and Sander were busy changing the rig for the participants. Then, we got onto the lake for a short row to test the boats again. We had to keep this row short because of the mid day heat.

The row was followed by a nice lunch, and a break of a few hours. At five we started the third row of the day (optional, of course). During the evening, Sander set up the first boats with NK Empower Oarlocks and Quiske pods.

Tuesday

On Tuesday morning’s workout, we did a special thing. We took advantage of the fact that the ferries are not running early in the morning, and we all rowed up to Veveří castle.

Of course, we took video and after we all returned to the club, we did a thorough analysis. By now, most participants know very well what they are working on.

After the coffee break, Adam took out a single and showed us a large variation of drills, from easy to very advanced. Then all participants went out for a short row to practice drills.

After lunch, we did analysis of the first sets of data.

The third row of the day was an individual one, again. Some of us did a structured workout (1500m at 24 spm, followed by two series of four times 1 minute on, 1 minute off).

At 6pm, it was time to take the participants to Klentnice for a nice dinner in the Palava wine region, not too far from Brno.

Wednesday

On Wednesday morning, it was rowing on video again. For the first time, the camp participants were showing off their improvements at higher stroke rate.

The daily routine continued. We had coffee and cake, looked at the videos and at the data, and then it was time for a second outing.

Fatigue was setting in, and the number of participants for the third outing of the day dropped. Most of us preferred a massage or wellness treatment at the hotel (or perhaps just a beer).

In the evening, we had a special event. First a seminar on rowing data, and then watching fireworks, all the while tasting local Moravian wines.

After watching the gorgeous sunset, we enjoyed the fireworks festival:

Yep, the best place to watch the fireworks is from our dock.

Thursday

On Thursday morning, the lake decided to show its choppier side. We decided to take the opportunity to row up to the castle again, but this time in coastal boats. The additional stability enabled us to do some of the more advanced drills without risking a swim.

After the coffee break, we had a session about using data on the erg.

The third day of the row was start practice for those of us who couldn’t get enough of rowing.

In the evening, we had a barbecue.

Friday

On the last day, we had everybody show off their best technique improvements on video.

After the coffee break, some of us went on a second row of the day, but most of us were already closing up the camp. It had been great, and there had been enough great rowing.

Time to say goodbye, prepare the boats for transport, and Romana and Sander went out on a quick outing on the double.

Do not look further than Prygl Rowing Camps.

Our highly-qualified team of coaches combines the skills of World Championship and World Cup winners, Olympians with US, Canada and Czech rowing trainer certifications.

You can bring your own boat, and we offer Wintech boats for rent for the duration of the camp. You can extend the rent to include participation at the World Rowing Masters Regatta in Budapest. It would be like rowing in your own boat. You can set the rigging to suit your height, weight and rowing skills, and we’ll make sure that the shoe size match your feet. No more stress at the regatta boat rental!

The Brno Dam (known as “Prýgl” in the local dialect) offers a 3-kilometer-long lake with a buoyed 2k course, ideal both for technique practice and for all kinds of training sessions. The usual water condition is flat, with occasional light chop thrown in for variation. Winds speeds in summer are usually very mild.

Our camps are hosted at CVK Brno rowing club, home to many Czech National Team members in both the Juniors, U23 and Elite categories. Often, we host training camps for the Czech national team preparing for big regattas.
At the north end of the lake, the river Svratka flows through a beautiful gorge, and there is the possibility to extend the row by 6 more kilometers, passing by a medieval castle.

The camps include hotel rooms with breakfast in Wellness and Spa Resort hotels Santon and Maximus, located a short walk from the rowing club. The vibrant town center of Brno, one of the top alternative city breaks according to The Guardian, is just a short tram ride away from the lake.

For those who want to do a volume rowing week, we support up to three trainings a day, offering coaching guidance and video and data analysis every day. Rowing makes you hungry. A coffee break with snacks as well as a rich lunch buffet are included in the camp price.

The June rowing camp includes a wine tasting excursion to the Pálava hills and a fireworks show on the Brno lake. Both the June and September camps will end with a party at the rowing club.

Equipment rental for the camps

Bring your own boat

It is best if you bring your own boat for the camp. We will help you set it up for rowing with data and will also be able to give rigging advice.

During the camp, your boat will be safely stored on the CVK Brno club grounds, out of sight and behind a closed gate.

However, we understand that it is not always possible to bring your own boats. In that case, you can rent Wintech equipment.

Boat rental

If you are not bringing your own equipment, we have the possibility to rent Wintech boats with Concept2 sculls. You can indicate the option when you book your camp. In reply to the confirmation email, please also indicate your weight and height, so we can make sure we bring the right boat for you.

For the September camp, there is an option to prolong the rental period to include the World Rowing Masters Regatta. Boat transport to and from that regatta will be included.

NK SpeedCoach GPS and Empower Oarlock

If your boat is not equipped with the Empower Oarlock or you don’t have a SpeedCoach GPS, we will equip you for the duration of the camp. The units may be purchased by you during the camp.

Quiske Pods

We will be rowing with Quiske pods to measure oar depth, seat speed, boat acceleration and other parameters. We will provide the pods. You may purchase your own pod during the camp.

The Quiske Pod works with the Quiske RowP app on iPhone or Android smartphone. Before the camp, please install the RowP app on your phone and bring a watertight pouch to put the phone in (or use a waterproof Android phone). No SIM card is needed for the phone, so you could buy a cheap, waterproof Android phone as your rowing display. Don’t hesitate to contact you in case you have any questions.

We will use double sided tape to mount the phone to your boat, but if you have a phone mount, bring it with you.
